Fish Oil

By now many people are beginning to hear about the health benefits of fish oil pills and Omega 3 fatty acids.  In fact, it’s the omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contained in fish oil pills that are beneficial.  Along with EPA and DHA found in fish oil pills, SDA, ETA, ETA(3) and HPA omega 3 fatty acids should not be overlooked.  Balance is the key and very important.

Fish oil pills benefit your health by having positive effects on your brain, heart and immune system.  Although fish oil may seem like the new miracle drug, it should not be thought of in such a way.  Fish oil pills are simply a natural way of providing beneficial nutrients to your body.  Our bodies do not produce the omega 3 fatty acids that comprise the health benefits obtained from taking fish oil pills.  Our bodies need these omega 3 acids and the only way we can get these omega 3 acids is through our diet.

Flax seed oil also provides us with omega 3 fatty acids.  One difference between flax seed oil and fish oil is that flax seed oil does not directly provide us with EPA and DHA but rather it provides us with the ALA omega 3 fatty acid.  ALA needs to be converted to DHA by our bodies, however it may not always be converted.  There is much debate about whether or not fish oil is better than flax seed oil.  While both are good, I personally choose to take fish oil pills because the EPA and DHA omega 3 fatty acids are directly present in fish oil.  Of couse, if you  have allergies to fish or shell fish or your dietetic preference is to not eat fish or meat products, then flax seed oil would fit your needs.
